Umbrage Orgy

I sometimes think that some forums and some virtual worlds are a haven for orgies of umbrage.

  1. I concur. I wish that I had named my forum Umbrage Orgy. I'm sure that it would have attracted exactly the same number of posters :)))

  2. LOL

I dunno. I have mixed feelings on that. On the one hand, the internet is FULL of people who enjoy a good Umbrage Orgy and on the other hand, I'd estimated that at least 68% of them would prefer not to acknowledge it so openly.

  3. Good point. I have always found that interesting, especially given the anonymous nature of posting in forums/blogs. In my mind, I would think that people would be more honest about the fact that just as they enjoy a good drama at the cinema or on TV, they enjoy a good forum/blog drama that is even interactive! Attachment to avatar and protection of the reputation of said avatar is stronger than I would have ever supposed.

    I know I'm enjoying it.

  5. Group-think...hive-mind etc etc...is a particularly provocative insult on forums.
If ever I am accused of it...My Umbrage-ometer starts hitting the read.
    I am not a number...I am a free man !! etc etc

On the other hand...I think I see evidence of it everywhere.
Definitely seems to be an "eye of the beholder" type deal.

Though not normally given to outbreaks of pessimism...I am starting to wonder, if it is even possible to have a reasonable discussion about controversial subject matter on forums these days.

I don't mind the jokes...lolcats...and tangential asides so much...as the Raging Tsunami of Butthurt that gets unleashed.

It gives one an impression, that most peeps are frustrated and angry at how their lives turned out...and this dissatisfaction will be spewed out willy-nilly....whatever the subject matter.

  6. Orfeu asked, "... if it is even possible to have a reasonable discussion about controversial subject matter on forums these days."

    In short, "No."

And "no" if you would have just left it at "reasonable discussion" without the controversy! I have been searching the internet for discussion blogs/forums and unless you want to go the totally inane route of something like a scrabooking forum (and I'm sure they have their idiots and trolls as well), I've yet to find anything that is satisfying. I've yet to see anything related to a SL forum that isn't either a big troll fest or so heavily and horribly moderated as to be dead boring.

    Oh.
    Yes.
    The simple answer was, "No."
    :)
